Thailand has continued to be one of the most tempting destinations for those who are seeking a combination of enchanting natural surroundings, alluring culture, and incredible biodiversity. Breathtaking silvery beaches lapped by warm, crystal clear waters are complemented by friendly locals, mouth-watering local delicacies, and an ancient and fascinating historical heritage rooted in Buddhist origins.

Many children in Thailand have an integrated school on their grounds, which is also available to the poor families of the region. Housing, food and teaching materials are also provided for the poor students. This level of support and encouragement is so important to those who would otherwise not have sufficient access to educational facilities and represents a real opportunity to improve their livelihoods and standard of living, and improve the future of the next generation. The experience of being involved in such a worthwhile and wonderful project will surely have an enduring effect on your outlook on life.

introduction week

Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Thailand, and of course Singburi, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, sample the local cuisine, familiarise yourself with Thai customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by.  Following this wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.

volunteer work

In your second week you will be introduced to the childcare system and the varying work possibilities for your placement. Besides teaching English you may also get the chance to work with the children in their vegetable garden, contributing to their subsistence lifestyle, and create activities and workshops for cultural exchange, environmental and other important issues. There is always much needed renovation work to be done, and beautifying of the centre, which can include building and painting walls, and making floors and libraries. Depending on your interests and experience you may also get the opportunity to get involved in arts and handicraft activities.

While some of the children may not be orphans in the Western sense of the word, they do come from poor families who cannot afford the costs of education. As a result the children will live in school centres and eagerly learn from the teachers and volunteers, returning home to their families during the holidays. During the holidays the work will mainly consist of spending time with those kids who have remained behind and carrying out maintenance work on the site.

You'll fly into Bangkok on the Sunday before your project begins and you will be met at the airport by a local representative. You will then transfer by bus or taxi to your project site for your placement, approximately 140 km north of Bangkok. In Singburi you will be met by local coordinators who will transfer you to the eco-house.

During the placement you will be staying in one of three eco-houses in Singburi. The rooms are twin shared and all the houses have Western style toilets, while one even has an Asian style toilet! You will have access to cool water showers, which you'll find refreshing in the heat of Thailand! There are communal areas for eating, relaxing and meeting your new friends and there is a local shop within walking distance of most of the houses should you feel the need for any additional treats!

There may also be the opportunity to spend some time in a homestay or at the orphanage itself in order to more effectively carry out the work necessary, although this will not be determined until you are on the placement.

All food is included during your placement, and you will find it to be typically Thai fare. Thai is one of the world's most exciting cuisines, and if you're willing to experiment, you'll be richly rewarded. Contrary to popular belief, not all Thai food is fiery hot and there are plenty of tasty dishes suited to the Western palate. This hybrid cuisine has been influenced by soups and noodle dishes from China, curries from India and satays from Indonesia. Most dishes incorporate four elements, sweet, sour, salty and hot flavours, and many of the dishes are rice or noodle based.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
