This project will give you the opportunity to learn a new language while experiencing a different and exciting culture. Italian is the third most widely spoken first language in the European Union with 65 million native speakers and it is spoken as a second language by 14 million EU citizens. Including Italian speakers in non-EU European countries and on other continents, the total number of speakers is around 85 million. So if you are travelling around the world, it will be highly likely that you will have the chance to practice it!  However, why going so far when Italy is so close? The best way to learn a language is to live in the country, having the chance to practice it every day with native speakers therefore if this is your goal, this project is the best choice for you.

You will join classes from 9 am to 1 pm, with a mid-morning break during which you will bond with the other students while drinking tasty Italian coffee. This helps the school in creating a nice environment for everyone and it will give you the chance to speak Italian freely, which is a good way to consolidate what you have learnt during your classes. You’ll be given important information about contemporary social and cultural life in Italy, and at the same time, you will develop language and communication skills, without neglecting grammar, phonology, lexis.
It is important to remember that to be fully confident in a foreign language, you need to understand its background and culture therefore, during this project, you won’t be seating all day in a class but you will discover the city and the surroundings of the region. Cultural and social activities will be organized to guarantee you the best outcome from this experience: you won’t be a tourist as you will be living surrounded by people keen to share their lives and experiences and you will feel like home. Italian culture is known to be sociable and friendly so being home sick is well far away from what you will be experiencing. At the end of this project you would like to stay longer as Italy will leave a mark in your heart.
Daily trips can be organized, if requested, to give you the chance to explore the surroundings and to really discover what this region has to offer. Bologna is a well-known artistic and culture centre, it offers lots of opportunities for individuals of all ages. Feel free to do your own research in order not to miss amazing events in the area.

The best way to get to Bologna is by plane as the airport, Bologna Guglielmo Marconi, is just 20 minutes away from the city centre and from the school. If requested, at an extra a cost, a pick up can be organized, however public transport is user friendly and very cheap, so you should find your way to the location very easily. It is also possible to get to Bologna by bus or train from other Italian airport, such as Milan, Modena, Ferrara or Ravenna.

The project cost includes accommodation in a home stay with a welcoming local family. Breakfast is included and you will have a fully equipped kitchen to cook typical dishes with your host family tricks and tips.
You will have your own bedroom which will be fully furnished. There will be a shared bathroom and a common area where you can socialise and share your experiences with fellow students and new friends.

A typical Italian breakfast is included in your accommodation option, although it is strongly suggested to go out and experience all of the culinary delights the city of Bologna has to offer. Italian cuisine is world famous and it has developed over the centuries, with cutting edge chefs leading the world’s Michelin star establishments. Local cuisine is rich and relies on a wealth of fabulous local ingredients.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
