A land of sensory overload, cultural extremes and extraordinary beauty and mystery, India has become one of the most desirable destinations to travel and volunteer. Its sheer size and dynamic, complex population combined with fascinating wildlife and a mystical and pervasive heritage filled with tales of ancient gods, kings and queens, makes it a place that will transform your perspectives and realign your priorities.

This program is located in Kerala – a state that stretches along almost 600 km of India’s southwest coast. Kerala’s is a popular destination and boasts pristine beaches, ancient ruins, banana groves, tea covered hills and relaxing network of backwaters.

Women in India face significant gender inequality, particularly in impoverished communities. This program aims to help women through economic empowerment and education by giving them the tools they need to build safe and independent livelihoods. Through this program we hope you will learn how different life is for these women and how hard it is for them to make ends meet. You will find the work deeply rewarding as you get a chance to build positive and lasting relationships with the women, and make a tangible difference to their lives.

This program aims to help women through economic empowerment and education, by giving women of Kerala the tools they need to build safe, independent, and better lives for themselves. Women who join the program in country are struggling financially due to a lack of education and vocational skills and the program addresses this problem by teaching vocational skills that can be used to generate an income. Many of the women that join the program have been subjected to abuse – either at home or through the prostitution industry. The program therefore provides an important safe haven for women to support each other discuss personal issues.

Throughout this placement, you will make an active contribution to the support and empowerment of women within the local community. You will lead group and one-on-one classes as well as prepare and develop lesson plans for the sessions. There is high demand from women to learn spoken English and computer skills. However, you will also have the opportunity to start workshops based on your own skills and expertise. In the past volunteers have started a range of workshops from health and nutrition to painting classes.

In addition to promoting creativity and entrepreneurship, your classes will provide a safe haven for these women where they can develop their self-esteem and independence in a supportive environment. By joining this project you will gain valuable work experience, easily transferable to future careers and/or educational opportunities, whilst making a valuable, positive and lasting contribution to women’s empowerment in Kerala.

You will be collected from Cochin International Airport by a friendly project representative and escorted to your project accommodation where you will have all the basic amenities needed, and get ready to start your project.

Whilst volunteering on this project your accommodation will be in a clean and safe hostel, or a guesthouse hosted by a welcoming local family. The accommodation will have electricity, western toilets and access to kitchen and lounge areas. It will also be located walking distance from basic amenities such markets and local shops.

The two meals included are breakfast which will be home cooked and can be either Indian or continental, and dinner which will be traditional home cooked Indian meals.

Lunch will be self-catered which is a fun element of travelling away from home and provides a good opportunity to bond with fellow travellers. There are western cafes around, but you may also wish to explore local restaurants and market stalls. A good tip is to look for restaurants or stalls that are busy with local people – as the locals will often know the best places to eat! India is world-renowned for it cuisine, so make sure you capitalise on this opportunity.

In your free time, or after your placement has finished, you may have the opportunity to engage in a number of cultural and adventure activities. Kerala offers a variety of opportunities that are quintessentially Indian: you can shake off stress by taking a relaxing boat ride down the famously peaceful backwaters; visit the lush mountain slopes of Munnar; unwind on the nearby cliffy beaches of Varkala and swim in the Arabian Sea; or, search for India’s Bengal tigers in the virgin forests of Periyar. The city of Cochin itself is a major port city for the west coast of India with its complex history reflected in its assortment of architectural styles and cultural diversity. Our competent and well-travelled in-country staff will be more than happy to recommend travel options for you in Kerala as well as India as a whole.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
