French is the official language spoken in over 29 countries across the world including Canada, parts of Africa and across Europe. Enjoy learning one of the world's most useful languages whilst integrating yourself into the daily rhythm of Senegal. Throughout this project you will experience the true culture and community life of this enchanting country.

Despite its diminutive size, Senegal has its own unique culture expressed by a blend of exotic music, tempting cuisine and unusual traditions and customs, making it a veritable melting pot of cultural discovery. Visit a pristine ivory coast line laced with the dramatic expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find beaches scattered with rose-tinged shells, palm trees flourishing in the sandy terrain and offshore coral reefs and cays replete with a thousand species of tiny fish and other exotic creatures.

Enjoy humid nights in the thriving port of Dakar, where you will find influences ranging from French to Arabic expressed in a multitude of cafés, bars and restaurants as well as galleries and museums. The perfect place to improve your French!

Whether you want to improve your career prospects, make travel easier or simply want access to the countless masterpieces that have been written in French, Frontier's French language immersion programme could be just what you are looking for! Being required to use the language on a daily basis will really help to engrain the grammar and vocabulary into your mind and allow you to come away speaking far more like a local than you would with formal lessons back at home.

Taught by an experienced tutor you will get an excellent introduction to this elegant language, picking up on colloquialisms whilst mastering your pronunciation. In class the focus will be on your pronunciation and fluency as well as building upon your vocab, ensuring that you grasp the fundamentals before moving on to more complex subjects as your confidence grows. Over the course of the week, you will receive 15 hours of one to one language tuition and will be evaluated on a regular basis to check your progress. When you return home you will be able to put what you have learnt immediately into practice with your homestay family as you talk about your experiences and plans. Fully immersing yourself in a new country and culture in this way is by far the most effective way to learn a language!

You will be met upon arrival at Dakar Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport by our friendly coordinator and taken to your accommodation.

Depending upon the time of your arrival, you will either be taken to a local hotel (if you arrive late at night) or directly to your welcoming homestay family in Dakar. You will be given your own private room which may be shared with one other volunteer and your accommodation will be based within a 30 minute walk of your tutor. The accommodation will of course be clean and comfortable with all the basic amenities and your host family will make you feel at home in this warm welcoming community.

During your stay you will enjoy three meals a day, which you will normally share with your host family. Dishes that you may encounter include ‘’Thièb diène’’, rice and fish served with sauce and vegetables, rice and meat dishes including domoda, glalakh and yassa and barbecued chicken in a rich onion and lemon sauce and if you are vegetarian, look out for the popular chopped egg salad amongst other tasty treats. Those with a sweet tooth may like to try peanut butter ice cream or other seasonal fresh produce. Generally the emphasis will be on simple home cooked dishes made with fresh local produce.

In Senegal, the traditional way to eat is from a huge bowl placed in the centre of the floor. The whole family sits and eats together using only the right hand. This is an integral part of Senegalese culture. However if you prefer, your host family will happily provide you with your own plate.

The city of Dakar is one of Africa's most vibrant, with a thriving music scene and buzzing street markets contrasting with beautiful, peaceful beaches, museums and galleries. There are many cultural workshops which you can attend and which you can book through local providers, further supporting the local economy. These include such varied activities as African drumming (djembe), African textile dying and traditional Senegalese cooking. Joining in activities with local people is a must and other activities such as football, volleyball and dancing are very popular.

There is plenty to explore around Senegal. The Casamance, for example, has sandy beaches, lush vegetation and a very welcoming population and St Louis in the North is an old colonial city where traces of the French colonial times can still be found.

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact Frontier’s dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
