Argentina is without a doubt one of the most fascinating destinations for a gap year adventure. With an enthralling blend of European culture and intoxicating Latin American spirit, the immense and beautiful capital city of Buenos Aires will captivate you with its alluring combination of cultural and historical heritage, vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, and friendly, welcoming people.

Check out the Argentina Medical Project video

Immersing yourself in day to day life here will give you a real taste of this beautiful country. If that’s not enough, Argentina is home to some of the most fascinating and inspiring attractions in the world, including vast vineyards, infamous steak-houses, the mountains and glaciers of Patagonia, the birthplace of Che Guevara, La Boca, Tango dancing in the street, and a wide variety of wildlife.

For all its magnificence, however, many of Buenos Aires’ health centres remain in need of enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to offer their time and efforts to help where necessary. Many Argentines in Buenos Aires live with inadequate health infrastructure and a general lack of sufficient medical facilities. This project will therefore present you with the unique opportunity to gain valuable experience working closely and effectively with medical professionals; assisting in a variety of tasks to provide an improved quality of life for local people of Buenos Aires.

Experience this celebrated destination, letting the spirit of Argentina bewitch you whilst at the same time benefiting the medical community of Buenos Aires. Take part in this once in a life time opportunity and never look back, Buenos Aires – the perfect location for your Frontier adventure!

The health centre you will be working at specialises in a number of different areas, with a key focus on preventive medicine and the promotion of health in Buenos Aires. The doctors and nurses here organise campaigns and workshops for the community so you will have the opportunity to understand the social and economical root of health issues, and therefore help more effectively.

The people you are helping will be very hard working and appreciative of your contribution to their medical centre, and will be incredibly responsive to your presence on the project. Your work will be rewarding and fulfilling, creating memories that will imprint on you for the rest of your life!

This project is best suited to medical students and medical practitioners as the work will involve carrying out medical duties within the hospital or clinic. Your work will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine. The placement will allow you to observe medical practices and give you the opportunity to take part in the day-to-day running of a hospital or clinic. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may be able to assist the doctors and nurses in their duties and gain hands-on experience of administering healthcare to the Argentine people.

Your work may consist of basic healthcare activities that will include a variety of rewarding and invaluable activities, such as shadowing professional doctors or nurses, assisting in administrative issues, providing healthcare information to local communities, participating in healthcare awareness campaigns and giving assistance to the existing medical staff. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend completely upon your own previous experience and qualifications as well as the needs of the hospital/clinic at the time of your visit. It is therefore important to remain flexible. Those volunteers with little experience could be given the opportunity to get involved with various community outreach programmes such as medical camps, health education, community visits or other relevant activities.

Upon arrival into Buenos Aires International Airport you will be greeted by a friendly in-country representative, who will then escort you to your home in Buenos Aires, where you will live for the duration of your stay.

You will be staying in a shared volunteer and student house. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow volunteers and travellers, spend time together when you are not working, and build the kind of friendships and experiences that stay with you for life.

You will be responsible for all of your own meals, and your accommodation will have facilities enabling you to do this, or you can take the opportunity to sample some of the city's abundant cafes and restaurants.
Argentina is well known for its good food, and in particular the fantastic local produce. You may wish to venture out into the city and try some of the food offered by local restaurants and market stalls. If you are a meat eater you might like to try a steak, which are world renowned! Buenos Aires certainly has a lot to offer the eager explorer, and the bustling street stalls and colourful markets invite you to immerse yourself in this wonderfully diverse culture.
Look out for some delicious meat dishes; meat is the national staple - such as beef cooked 'asado style', or 'parillo', which is grilled sausage served with salad. Empanadas are also a national favourite; these half-moon shaped pastries can be filled with a range of ingredients such as meat and vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, then Dulce de Leche will be right up your street! Specific diets and vegetarians can be accommodated.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
