Laos; famed for its flooded rice fields, dense tropical forests, towering limestone karsts, awesome plateaus, rugged mountains and laidback lifestyle. Marvel at rivers flowing far and wide through lush landscapes before breaking into spectacular cascades of light. Discover ancient sun-baked monasteries, monks clothed in traditional ochre robes and street markets imbued with the scents and aromas of exotic spices and rare oils.

Frontier’s sustainable development initiative is set in the quaint town of Vang Vieng, 150km north of the capital city Vientiene. Vang Vieng is nestled in a stunning location, encircled by magnificent lime-stone karst cliffs and lush green fields. At the foot of these cliffs you will find Vang Vieng’s most famous natural resource; the idyllic and graceful Nam Song river. This small town has become a milestone stop along the South East Asia backpacker tour, with a lively nightlife and opportunities to tube down the river!

If you want to experience one of Laos’ must see destinations whilst putting something back into this incredible community then look no further, the Laos Sustainable Development programme is the perfect way to experience this easy going destination!

In recent years, Vang Vieng has seen an increased depletion of its natural resources as a result of spiralling tourism and development. This project aims to lead by example by supporting and implementing sustainable practices within the community. You will be working and learning throughout this programme which pioneers alternative building and farming practices as well as using renewable energy sources and engaging the wider community about key environmental issues.

Throughout your placement you will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of community initiatives making your time on the project incredibly varied and interesting. The project supports a number of permaculture initiatives including organic farming, sustainable building projects, environmental awareness and teaching, establishing a bio-gas technology facility as well as looking at water supply and waste management. You may have the opportunity to participate in the area of your choice depending on availability and can discuss your preferences with your Volunteer Coordinator upon arrival.

This project is incredibly rewarding, enabling you to experience the famous hospitality of the people of Laos whilst living in an idyllic setting, and gaining a unique insight into life behind the tourist trail!

The project is located in Vang Vieng in central Laos, 150km north of Vientienne. You will fly into Bangkok or Vientienne airport and then make your own way to the project site via public transport. We will provide you with easy to follow instructions prior to your departure to enable you to plan your journey. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant country. Please aim to arrive on the Sunday.

Throughout your project you will be staying in shared dormitory style accommodation at our volunteer house. You will find the accommodation to be basic, but of course clean and comfortable. The rooms will be single sex and shared, and participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and use resources with restraint, and to help by keeping the living areas clean and tidy.

You will be provided with three meals per day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals are healthy, sourced using only local ingredients and delicious flavours. Food in Laos is delicious, varied and inexpensive. You can enjoy sampling traditional cuisine; dishes such as delicately spiced curries, fresh local market produce, and delicious meat, fish and vegetables.

There are a number of restaurants offering Western food around town, however please bring additional funds to cover any such excursions.

In your free time you will be spoilt for choice with loads of activities and wonderful sights and experiences. Visit the local towns with their complex and multifaceted architecture, and friendly, welcoming locals, or embark on a range of adventure activities on offer locally. If tubing, rock climbing, cycling, or kayaking tickle your fancy then Laos is the ideal location! You should be able to agree reasonable rates with local providers.

Home to mysterious and jaw-dropping caves, Vang Vieng also offers the perfect combination of exhilarating adventure activities. Exploring the caves is a fascinating experience, although climbing is also recommended for the more adventurous adrenaline seekers out there.

However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact Frontier’s dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@statravel.com .

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
