The school provides a unique Spanish language experience as emphasis is on participants understanding the culture as well as learning the language, a unique advantage of studying abroad. Fun cultural activities will be included in your programme such as cooking lessons, additional conversation classes and Latin dance lessons, designed to give you an insight into what makes Costa Rica the home of Pura Vida.

As one of the few schools in Costa Rica to be entirely owned and staffed by Costa Ricans you will be lucky enough to be a part of a genuine cultural experience. The aim at the school is to make the lessons interesting and fun, often the best way to learn a language quickly and easily. The teaching approaches are dynamic and varied and the classes are intensive, yet challenging and enjoyable.

The small classes and active participation training offer the flexibility to meet your individual needs while providing you with a comprehensive learning course. The classes consider Spanish as a whole and as well as there being an emphasis on speaking abilities, they also take into account grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, pragmatic use and cultural understanding.

On your first day of class you will need to be at the school between 7:30am and 8:00am for an oral evaluation to determine your Spanish level (placement test). Your family will bring you to the school. You will be provided with a student card with telephone number and exact address of your home stay (bring two passport photos with you, one for the ID and the other for your file). In the afternoon there will be time for a salsa class and the chance to explore the facilities at the language school. Then, you will have an orientation session (at 16:00), providing information about the course as well as about San Jose and Costa Rica in general.  This is a great opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. At the end of the meeting, your host family will pick you up to show you the way back home.

Once the course has begun your classes will run four days a week (Monday - Thursday), and a typical daily itinerary could be as follows:
09:00-12:00 Morning classes
12:00-13:00 Lunch break
13:00-15:00 Afternoon classes

After your Spanish classes you will have the chance to participate in afternoon cultural activities:

  • Latin dance classes (every day from 15:00-16:00 and 16:00-17:00)
  • Cooking classes (Wednesdays from 16:00-17:00)
  • Conversation classes (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:00-17:00)

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change, and volunteers are therefore asked to be flexible, open-minded and understanding.

You will be greeted at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose by the driver of the language school and escorted to your assigned homestay. Since your Spanish course will start on the Monday, we recommend you to arrange your arrival for the Sunday so that you have time to settle in and get your bearings before starting the programme.

Your accommodation will be with a home stay family, the perfect way for you to learn more about the Costa Rican culture. You will have the opportunity to practise speaking Spanish with the family every day and learn about the Costa Rican way of life, complementing the classes that make up your language course.

You will have your own private bedroom at the house and if you are travelling with a friend we can also try to accommodate you at the same home stay. Please request this as soon as possible after booking to have the best possible chance of confirming.

You will live with a carefully selected host who has experience of hosting students. Your accommodation will be clean, secure and comfortable and families are carefully selected for their hospitality, friendliness and warmth.

Your home stay family will provide you with breakfast and dinner each day (lunch is not included).  Meals will be based on a Costa Rican diet which can be fairly basic and mainly consist of foods such as rice, beans, corn, pasta, vegetables, meat and seasonal fruits. Gallo pinto will feature heavily!

In the afternoons you will have the choice of taking part in the following activities at no extra cost but please be aware that these may vary and are subject to availability:

Latin Dance Classes
Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bolero and the latest Latin Dance Rhythms are all taught during daily 2-hour dance lessons every afternoon. You will have the chance to participate in as many dance classes as you wish with experienced instructors who will help you discover the fun of Latin dance as well as providing a great form of exercise!

Cooking Classes
Cooking classes are offered every week so that you can learn to prepare authentic Costa Rican cuisine and experiment with exotic recipes. Your class will be taught completely in Spanish so be prepared!

Extra Conversation sessions
To help improve your oral skills, extra "Conversation Hour" sessions are held twice a week. These sessions are informal and relaxed and give you the opportunity to learn about the Costa Rican culture, share experiences and practise speaking in Spanish.
Additionally, San José has many social and cultural activities all year round, including music festivals, concerts at the national theatre, dance clubs and all types of restaurants.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays will be your free time to spend as you wish and the language centre can assist you in making exciting plans to see the rest of the country. San José is situated in the middle of the country making it a convenient location for travelling to other parts of Costa Rica. In San José you will find buses that will take you directly to the Caribbean coast, the Pacific coast, Arenal volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio National Park and many other destinations.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
