Mexico is the Central American heartland that epitomises the best of Latin fiesta spirit and an endless fascination of the legacy of the Mayan civilization. In Mexico you will discover stunningly elegant colonial towns surrounded by rainforest cloaked mountains, heavenly beaches where Mayan ruins tumble down to the pristine shores, and markets humming with a hundred street vendors selling everything from pungent leather handbags to magic spells from shamans!

Mexicans are said to be the happiest people in the world and it’s not hard to see why! Mexican culture is an exotic and heady mix of dark magic and a strong sense of celebrating life and death. Look out for the "diá de los muertos", or the 'Day of the Dead' to see colourful skeletons and huge processions filling the streets of every town!

Spend time in one of Mexico's most appealing coastal destinations, Puerto Escondido, situated along the Emerald Coast. You will find a world famous surf beach fringing the unimaginably blue Pacific Ocean, a buzzing and multicoloured little town with an exuberant social scene, and some of the friendliest locals you will ever meet. Learn or improve your Spanish in this glorious setting as you discover this relatively unexplored corner of Mexico.

Having the ability to speak Spanish fluently opens a door of opportunity for you to be able to communicate with the 500 million other Spanish speakers in the world. Just imagine where that could take you! Whether you want to improve your career prospects, make travel easier, or want to access the countless masterpieces that have been written in Spanish, then Frontier’s Spanish immersion course in Mexico is perfect for you.

You will receive 2 hours of Spanish tuition per day 5 days a week. Classes will most likely be held in small groups, which is a perfect way to ensure that your conversational skills develop to a good standard to allow you to communicate confidently and effectively with the locals. Your knowledge of Spanish grammar will also improve significantly.

To supplement your language placement, we offer all of our students the opportunity to take up one of the following social activities included within the cost of your booking to help you socialise and practice your new language skills. Options available include:

  • 2 week surf board rental
  • 2 x surf lessons (one land, one water)
  • Cooking classes
  • Salsa classes
  • Half day excursion

*If you wish to participate in more than one of the above activities, please bring along additional funds to cover any such activities.

Alongside this, you may also decide to participate in a variety of volunteering opportunities available within the community. This may include teaching English to local school children, working in an orphanage or assisting in conservation/wildlife re-introduction programs that ensure the protection of the area’s precious natural resources.

The project is located in Puerto Escondido in southern Mexico on the Emerald Coast, looking out onto the Pacific Ocean. You will fly into Puerto Escondido International Airport and then make your own way to the project via public transport (10 – 15 minutes). We will provide you with easy to follow instructions prior to your departure to enable you to plan your journey.

During your project you will be staying in student apartments attached to the language school, each equipped with a fully furnished kitchen and bathroom. The apartments are located less than a 5 minute walk from the beach. You will wake up each morning to spectacular views of the ocean, and fall asleep to the lapping of the waves. All apartments come with a ceiling fan, basic furniture and clean sheets. There is also a roofed terrace and garden for you to relax in after each day’s adventure.

The apartments are roughly 2km from the Spanish language school and the main tourist centre, so you can easily access all the fun activities of Puerto Escondido but still have a calm, safe place to chill. There are a number of small stores and restaurants nearby for you to try out, and a couple of internet cafes to keep in touch with your loved ones at home.

You will be responsible for providing your own food during your placement, and the kitchen provided within your apartment is ideal for some home cooking. There are a number of small grocery stores around your accommodation for you to buy ingredients, and you may even wish to try out some of the recipes you’ve learnt in cooking class!

Alternatively you could practice your Spanish by visiting some of the pleasantly shady open air cafes on the beach front for bargain basement prices on mouth-watering dishes such as chicken enchiladas, tortillas, freshly caught fish seared on a grill and refreshing salads. If you fancy something a bit more upmarket, there are some great restaurants just off the beach further into town. Wherever you eat, you can expect to enjoy Mexican favourites such as guacamole, fajitas and mole (a savoury sauce made from dark chocolate), as well as loads of fresh produce such as pungent cheeses, spicy marinades and watch out for the dips that are served with tortilla chips - spicy! Breakfast favourites include 'huevos' (eggs) served as an omelette, and a lunchtime treat may include chorizo served in a potato flan.

While surfing is a huge draw for the area, the beach Playa Zicatela being recognised as one of the top ten surfing destinations in the world, there is also so much more to discover in your spare time here. Take a fishing boat tour on a 'lancha' to enjoy a day at sea spotting shoals of luminescent fish, turtles, and even dolphins. These boat trips will take you to shady lagoons and stunning wildlife areas where you will find some of Mexico's most colourful avian residents, and you can even swim in cool waterfalls or revitalising thermal springs for some refreshing therapy!

Adventure and sport activities available include sport fishing, scuba diving, banana boats, and snorkelling and swimming in protected coves such as Carrizalillo. Cultural sites include Mexican villages and indigenous communities within an hour's drive of Puerto Escondido where you can catch a glimpse of unspoilt Mexico. There are Mayan ruins at Tulum and Palenque only a bus ride away, and markets, museums and towns aplenty.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
