An absolutely unforgettable experience!

My time on the Thailand Orphanage and Construction was incredible. An absolutely unforgettable experience! The partner organisation was extremely helpful and answered all our questions and queries. The first week was our Siam Culture week which provided us with a further cultural awareness and respect of the Buddhist religion. Amongst the activities in this week were: a Thai cooking lesson where we cooked Pad Thai and Papaya Salad, which were very tasty; a Thai language lesson which proved very useful because a lot of Thai people do not speak English; and visits to various temples, which left me in awe. The weekend was our free time so a few of us went on a trip to Kanchanaburi, which is a beautiful province around an hour away from Bangkok. Here, we rode the Death Railway and learnt about the history of Thailand in WW2.

Our orphanage project started on the second week. I was placed in a school for disadvantaged children, very close to the main orphanage. The week was spent painting and decorating the walls of the school. This was hard work but was very rewarding from the smiles on the children’s’ faces. During our spare time at the school, we were allowed to play with the children, which I think they really appreciated. At the end of the week the children gave us some presents, which was lovely and made leaving them even more upsetting. The Thai cuisine is one of the richest in the world, with an amazing combination of sweet, sour and spicy tastes. I really enjoyed the food and tried everything I was offered. I would recommend this project to anyone who enjoys working with children and isn’t scared of a little bit of hard work. It is the most rewarding feeling when a child hugs you and smiles at you because you have made a difference to their lives, even if it’s only a small difference.
