WHAT DOES THE COURSE DO?

If you’d like to develop a career in the outdoors, our well-established fast track training programme could provide the ideal launch pad.

Over this intensive and exciting four-month training period you’ll work towards a clutch of National Governing Body Awards, father a huge amount of experience and develop your personal skills.

What’s more, when you leave you’ll take with you the respect and recognition that comes with having been trained at the National Mountain Centre.

Rubbing shoulders with the instructors, you’ll stay in on-site accommodation seven days a week at the Plas y Brenin, even though your course only runs Monday to Friday. There will be the opportunity to either join in with other courses taking place at the weekends or simply go climbing or paddling with your new friends at the National Mountain Centre. What’s more, you’ll enjoy three hearty meals a day, overlooking Snowdon in our scenic dining room.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

During this intensive and exciting course you’ll receive personal skills training in kayaking, open canoeing, hill and mountain walking, rock climbing, orienteering, first aid, risk awareness and hazard management.

As part of a personalised programme, you may complete coaching and leadership training courses for the following CWA, SPA, WGL, ML Summer, REC First Aid at Work, BCU/UKCC Level 1 Certificate and British Cycling Level 2 in Mountain Bike Leadership Training.

For those with a greater range of experience, and perhaps some of the above qualifications, it may be possible to work towards or complete some of the following – ML Winter, IML training, MIA training, BCU/UKCC Level 2 Certificate, BCU WW Safety and Rescue and REC First Aid Trainer.

At the end of four months with us you’ll be able to look back on an incredible experience, during which you will have:

  • Been coached by leaders in the field.
  • Paddled and climbed alongside the most experienced coaches and instructors in the country.
  • Been able to use the Plas y Brenin name to open doors in the outdoor industry.
  • Benefited from our vast array of experience working in the outdoor industry.
  • Received input from long-term career professionals every day.
  • Had access to a fantastic range of equipment.
  • Stayed in excellent accommodation in the beating heart of the UK Outdoor scene.
  • Trained in a variety of teaching and coaching styles.
  • Spent 4 months with like-minded people.
  • Had the greatest chance possible to achieve your potential as a climber, paddler, mountain biker and mountaineer.
  • Have access to a mentor at every stage of your development.
  • Worked towards gaining a wide variety of National Governing Body qualifications – given your start point experience.
  • Saved up to 10 days of assessment credits at Plas y Brenin so you can return later in the year to attend National Governing Body assessment courses free of charge.

To help streamline your career development even further, our staff will be able to guide you through registration with each of the necessary national governing bodies helping you to understand the progression and pre-requirements for each scheme. You will be expected to cover the cost of each registration yourself.

The course cost includes all meals, accommodation and equipment hire during the four months.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Travel by Train

You need to get to Llandudno Junction Railway Station. Many trains depart from London, with connections from other parts of the country at Crewe and Chester. Plas y Brenin offers a collection service from Llandudno Junction on the evening before the first day of your course and will return you on the last day of your course. As the station is about 25 miles away, we only pick people up and drop off once a day. We will pick up at the station at 9.30pm. We leave Plas y Brenin at 5.30pm on the day your course ends. You should not book your train home any earlier than 6.30pm.

Travel by Road

Capel Curig is on the A5 (London to Holyhead Road) and the Centre is about 400 metres from the village along the A4086. From the North take the M56, A55, A5 or A470. Traffic congestion is sometimes heavy on the roads in holiday periods.

This lovingly restored farmhouse has recently been renovated to include first class single en-suite rooms, so you can enjoy your four month stay in comfort. The farmhouse is accessed along a secure forest track from the main road with plenty of parking outside.

There is a spacious living from with a 42 finch flat screen TV and several comfy sofas, which can be used either for relaxing or as an informal classroom. There is free wireless internet access throughout. The farmhouse has its own efficient drying room so you can dry your kit easily ready for the next day. Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
