The small island of Bali is renowned for its beautiful and varied landscapes, from towering volcanic mountains, vibrant green rice fields, contrasting black and white sand beaches to amazing coral reefs. Bali is also home to plenty of diverse and sophisticated cultural attractions and art forms such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, music and dance.

Make a positive contribution by assisting communities through the renovation and construction of local community centres and other essential infrastructure on the Frontier-Bali Construction programme. This rewarding work will help provide safe and accessible venues for various administrative, family support and educational purposes within the community. As you stand back and behold the final outcome of your hard work, you will have little doubt as to its value to the local community.

Introduction Week

Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Bali, in respect of which you will visit many local sites of special interest such as nearby markets and places to sample the local cuisine. These are all ways to help you familiarise yourself with Indonesian customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully to learn some key phrases to help you get by. Following this wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in your new surroundings, your volunteer briefing will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.

Construction Work

Throughout your placement you will be involved in a range of building and renovation activities, including decorating and maintaining various structures in the villages surrounding Ubud such as community centres, schools, libraries and playgrounds. You could be involved in a range of activities from digging, removing dirt, laying bricks, carpentry, painting, laying tiles and maybe even doing some landscaping and gardening.
You will work with your fellow volunteers under a local foreman who will provide you with all the training you will require and any guidance you may need while on the project. You will work closely alongside members of the local community which is a great chance to get to know the local people who will directly benefit from your efforts. As the work is of a physical nature and may be challenging at times, it is important that you have a good level of personal fitness. Your work schedule may also change at relatively short notice as a result of the weather and other local conditions, so that a flexible approach is also essential.

Upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, on the Sunday, you will be met by a staff member from our local partner organisation and transported to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest, staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Please be sure to arrive between 6am and 8pm to qualify for a pickup. Pickup is available at an extra cost if you need to arrive outside these times.

Throughout your placement you will be staying at our volunteer centre in Ubud with your fellow volunteers. The accommodation will be basic but of course clean, secure and comfortable and you will have access to all the basic facilities you’ll require during your stay. Spend the evenings relaxing with your new friends or exploring the surrounding area.

You will be provided with three meals a day during the week and two meals on Saturday and Sunday. Food will be typically Balinese, consisting of a fusion of Indonesian and Chinese styles, some of the most popular dishes being nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice with a fried egg on top) and mie goreng (fried noodles with egg). Another Indonesian favourite is Satay (spicy marinated thin slices of meat, threaded onto a skewer, barbecued, and served with a spicy peanut sauce).

Be open minded, and be patient with things. Sometimes things are at your convenience and with a n...

Bali has a huge range of additional adventure and cultural activities to offer outside your project time. Why not take a visit to some remote villages and mingle with the locals, take a rainforest canopy tour and if you’re feeling more adventurous there is even the opportunity to go white water rafting. Alternatively you could use your time off to go island hopping, scuba diving, volcano trekking, or take wildlife safaris in the National Parks.

After all that you will undoubtedly want to relax in one of Bali’s many spa resorts or pristine beaches. All of these activities can easily be arranged with one of the many local providers, with the resutl that your contribution to the local economy is even more significant.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
