Your FREE Teaching Placement will take place at one of the participating schools across the region. This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and adventurous travellers who want to experience the real China and to immerse themselves in Chinese culture. This project prepares you for being a professional foreign language teacher in China.

By participating in the long term Frontier China Teaching Programme, you will be helping your students improve their level of English and bringing a fresh approach to teaching styles and lesson types. Teaching is not just about transferring knowledge; it is about building confidence and trust and about forging friendships. Before long, you'll find that your students become like a family to you and you’ll enjoy attending local festivals or exploring China’s spectacular countryside with them.

In return for your commitment and helping Frontier to support these local schools, Frontier is able to offer this volunteering opportunity completely free of charge!

Your placement in China starts with 4 weeks intense Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) training in Gongcheng. This will include teacher training and introductions to Chinese culture. You will meet students and nearby schools, as well as observing lessons with both Chinese and foreign teachers. You will then have the opportunity to practise teaching with your peers and in the local schools before beginning the placement itself.

Once you have passed the training course and completed the 4 month placement at the school you will be issued with a TEFL certificate. Our local coordinators will help you to secure a teaching placement at a local school teaching around 20 hours per week. You will have the opportunity to make and implement your own lesson plans, giving you the perfect opportunity to experience real China, make a difference to future generations, immerse yourself in Chinese culture and make friends for life with your welcoming hosts and the wonderful children.

Upon your arrival at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) you will be picked up by a friendly member of staff who will transfer you to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest, the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this beautiful and captivating country.

As the project is broken up into two sections, the training and the teaching placement, you will stay in two different locations. Firstly, during your training you will be staying in dormitory accommodation at our volunteer centre. Rooms will be shared between volunteers (same sex) and there are western style toilets, hot showers and washing machines/laundry service available.

For the teaching phase of the placement, your accommodation will be arranged by the school to which you are assigned and so will vary slightly from school to school, although facilities are likely to be similar to those you enjoy during your training weeks. Most schools provide onsite accommodation for FREE, or provide an accommodation allowance if you choose not to stay in the accommodation provided.

During the training period you will be provided with three meals per day throughout the week Monday to Friday, offering you a great opportunity to experience the delicious local cuisine. At the weekends you will be responsible for sourcing your own food, giving you the chance to explore the local restaurants and markets.

Throughout the teaching phase of the placement you will be provided with lunch at the school canteen, which is therefore not available on weekends and throughout school holidays. You will be responsible for sourcing and paying for all other meals.

There are many different varieties of Chinese cooking styles, usually based on the region from which they originate. Many of us will be familiar with elements of Chinese food but you can expect the staples of rice and noodles served with fresh stir-fried vegetables, including regional delicacies like Soya beans, bamboo shoots and Bok Choy (Chinese cabbage). There are all sorts of meats and sea foods available along with soups and stews, all flavoured using different sauces such as black bean, Hoisin and Oyster.

We highly recommend that applicants for the FREE teaching placement consider joining the China Intro Week which has been specifically designed to help integrate travellers into Chinese culture whilst at the same time enabling you to meet other like-minded travellers before setting off on your adventure.

You'll find plenty to do whilst on your teaching project in China. During your free time, activities such as hiking, caving, climbing, Chinese Mandarin language lessons, bamboo rafting, tubing down the Li River, hiring bicycles, acupuncture and massage may be available.

The region is a pleasant mix of both the old and the new, and throughout the region you’ll be amazed at the natural beauty and peaceful tranquillity of life along the Li River. The area has plenty to offer with a weekend trip to the famous Longji rice terraces in Longsheng, a scene of which is printed on the back of ¥20 bank notes, being very worthwhile. You can also explore the vibrant city of Guilin taking in the old town, lakes, the river and stopping off at the night markets. After your project, tours of the region or even further a field in China can be arranged for you including a range of adventure and cultural activities. If you prefer to explore these sites for yourself, our field staff can offer valuable insider tips and guidance to you and your new friends.

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
