Visit the diverse and exotic country of Cambodia while discovering it's unique combination of dramatic landscapes, captivating cultural and historical heritage, and of course, its friendly people. Visitors from the world over have fallen in love with Cambodia, with its enchanting and unique Asian culture, and complex, mystical ambience. You will be staying on the paradise island of Koh Rong Sanloem, fringed with palm trees and white sandy beaches. Let the spirit of Cambodia bewitch you with its vibrant culture, pristine beaches, diverse sea life, and welcoming people.

Despite the Cambodian people's resilience and ingenuity, many still face significant challenges as the population grows and society diversifies. Lack of basic services such as education, infrastructure and healthcare, along with limited job prospects are common difficulties managed by Khmer people.

The school where you will be based has many students, few teachers and limited resources, meaning that volunteers are extremely important in contributing to the succesful delivery of educational services to local children. Depending on age and education levels of students, you will be teaching basic ESL skills, while integrating marine conservation practices into the curriculum, reflecting a majority of the local people's livelihoods.

Poverty all too often results in a lack of education for children in Cambodia. This means that many children and families become trapped in a cycle of deprivation that often cause ongoing challenges in their lives and makes them vulnerable to exploitation. Poverty can also result in malnourishment, homelessness, and limits access to effective healthcare and sanitation.You can contribute to breaking poverty cycles like these by helping to improve the educational services children in this community can access.

Providing teaching assistance to children is a practical way to help to enable them to access their fundamental human right to education and the opportunities that come with it. It is also a useful way to build up your own skill base and independence with practical TEFL experience.

Literacy is vitally important in allowing children to realise their goals and aspirations in future education and also in adulthood. As English is the main language of commerce and tourism, good ESL skills allow young Cambodians greater access to high school and college scholarships, and can help them find stable and secure jobs in the future. You will need to use a variety of teaching methods and techniques, as well as playing games and dancing and singing. You will be required to be creative and inspiring with your teaching, using the innovative and fun techniques of TEFL as the basis for your teaching framework.

You will also be required to assist the children with the vegetable garden and other community projects, as well as beach and reef cleanups, coral garden maintenance and other marine, community development activities.

The project start day is a Monday. It is recommended that you arrive in Phnom Penh Sunday morning, before making your way to Sihanoukville for the night. This will mean you'll be able to take the Monday morning ferry to the island. Your Volunteer Coordinator will be able to provide you with advice as to how to make your own way to the Sihanoukville, or alternatively a pickup can be arranged to take you to Sihanoukville for USD$60.

Volunteers stay in the volunteer house on the office site of our local partner organisation. There are usually be shared living spaces, tea and coffee facilities, drinking water and laundry services can be arranged for a small cost.

Food is provided during placements and is a mix of Khmer staples and maybe some western food. Khmer food is a delicious mix of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese flavours, but is unique in itself and can be both spicy and non-spicy. Many dishes have been adapted for the Western palate! There are also some Western food options on the island. There will be some kitchen facilities available for you to cook simple meals if you'd prefer.

You may like to take the opportunity to travel in Cambodia before or after your Frontier project. If so you will undoubtedly explore the mystical world of the temples of the Khmer Empire, with its beautiful unspoiled monuments, magical atmosphere, and charming monkeys tumbling amongst the ruins. Or take a road trip through the rice paddy fields, and catch a glimpse of the age old farming techniques that are still in use today.

In your spare time you'll have opportunities to swim in the sparkling blue waters around the island, or to play football or volleyball on the beach.

After a long hard day you may prefer to relax with a soda and sway in a hammock, or sit and chat to your new friends beside a roaring beach campfire, under a sky lit up by millions of stars.

Cambodia's marine life is dazzlingly beautiful and is a snorkeler’s paradise. If you'd like to get closer to the deep reefs during your stay we can arrange scuba diving training or individual dives through a local provider* (prices available on request). As you can see, there is certainly no shortage of fantastic opportunities to join in on!

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.

Frontier Partner Projects and Frontier group projects are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organisations, local research institutes, academic organisations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.

To apply for this project, or to register your interest, just click on the orange "Apply Now!" button at the top of the menu. Fill out and submit a short application form and then one of our advisers will give you a call back to answer any questions and to progress your application if you wish to continue.

There is no obligation when making an application, and you do not need to pay anything at this point.
